My most successful motivator has been public accountability. For example, several years ago, 6-8 of my coworkers started a weight-loss office-pool. Each person contributed $20 and the person who was most consistent in meeting their weight-loss goals and exercising regularly for 6 months won the prize.

This sounded too much like betting for my taste, so I asked the organizer if I could be a non-cash participant. They talked among themselves and agreed that I could put no money in but I would get no money out and my scores would be tracked with the rest of them.

Everybody in the group made a point of telling me that I did not have a chance because I had no cash motivation. Talk about awesome motivation! Tell me I can't do something only if you want to guarantee that I will!

I even beat my own stretch goals and blew everyone else out of the water! I had a point to prove and the gauntlet had been thrown.

Hi Robyn! I love your idea of small rewards along the way. We humans do seem hard wired for reward-response, don't we? ;-) Thank you for the motivation this week! It will be much easier to stay on track when a reward awaits me at the end!

Karen
